CAR AS A SENSOR

Description

One of the greater challenges of Intelligent Traffic Systems can be seen in obtaining reliable and contemporary information about driving conditions. Using the cars on the road for sensing these conditions can be a cost effective solution. Therefore, the signals from systems that are connected to SPITS are used in a Sensor Fusion concept to for instance reconstruct road curvature that is demonstrated in a curve warning application.

Objectives

Sensor data from registered vehicles is used to determine curve radius of road layout. The assessed data is sent to back office to be updated in the navigation system for better accuracy of road layout.

Inputs

  • Sensor data from vehicles

  • Warning algorithm concept

  • Embedded chipsets in each vehicle

  • Navigation system with HMI

Benefits

  • Reduces the risk of accidents around tight curves in bad weather conditions

  • Opens up possibilities to use sensor data to introduce more applications

Limitations

Car as a Sensor

Developed by

Project Status

Communication Protocol

TNO, TomTom

Demonstrated

Celullar Communications (4G LTE, HSDPA)

Project Outcomes

Trials were made after the SPITS project.

  • Since the speed advice is given for curvy roads, the driver distraction is possible

  • Sensors should checked periodically,if it doesnot works then the whole system will not operate
