INTRODUCTION
SPITS is an open, scalable, real-time, distributed, sustainable, secure and affordable platform for Co-operative Intelligent Traffic Systems applications, evolving from existing infotainment systems subsidised by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.

The project has involved two years (2009-2011) of innovative thinking, close cooperation between organisations and the construction of prototypes to prove the validity of the system.
To realise the targets set by the Dutch government with respect to mobility in 2020, intelligent traffic systems (ITS) when implemented, aims to minimise traffic congestion, the need of extra roads & infrastructure and ensure optimal fuel consumption.

The SPITS system comprises the vehicle On-Board Unit (OBU), the Road-Side Unit (RSU) infrastructure and the Back Office (BO) service centre. Communications between these elements is a major part of the Strategic Platform.
SPITS aims to achieve the following:
-
Building the next generation on-board units (Navigation systems, radio, etc.,) that are open-sourced and are easily configurable for OEM specific requirements. They will also be (hardware) upgradeable, which will allow innovation during the lifetime of the system (i.e. lifetime of the car) and lead to faster adoption of newer technologies.
-
Building on the existing roadside units to support cooperative technology and to supply local information about all traffic.
-
Build the next generation of back offices, that can offer services to either on-board units or roadside units and that can realise remote service life cycle management.

The assets under SPITS were categorised as:

1. Road Safety
2. Smart Mobility
3. Traffic Efficiency
