Today, ‘INTELLIGENT TRAFFIC SYSTEMS’ is a hot topic. It is attracting attention worldwide in order to improve safety, avoid congestion, provide services to drivers and reduce the overall environmental impact of mobility.

In 2009, SPITS was a vision. It started in the middle of the worldwide economic crisis as a Top High Tech project backed by the Dutch Government. The SPITS partners believed that by cooperating across the value chain and by creating open standards, they could find practical and economically attractive mobility solutions.
Our team set out to research the technologies and use-cases under SPITS to facilitate the upcoming ‘Smart Revolution’ from the perspective of city planning and development.

The process involved the study and evaluation of 18 use-cases. Structured methods of evaluation were developed for unbiased evaluation. Each use-case was assessed in terms of its safety, infrastructure, communication technologies, services offered, security of the information, market study, technological & social aspects and traffic flow. These use-cases were proposed to be reused based on their scores on the developed assessment form.

Interactive interviews with personnel within the Dutch ITS team helped provide a deeper insight over these use-cases. The interviews proved crucial since the experience shared by the members who were directly involved in the project is parallel to none. Through the interviews, we also gained access to key information of certain use-cases that led us to build an unbiased hypothesis for the reusability of a certain use-case.

The result of this page is reflected by the effort of the team over a period of six months, that was involved in the study and compilation of results. Now, we provide the end users a platform to gain access to information of various use-cases, that was certainly not available under one roof!
